Local Young Heroes Win Grants

January 30, 2012

Young sporting champions from the Murray electorate were presented with certificates for grants of $500 today to meet the costs associated with competing at the highest levels.

Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray presented the awards to the nine young people under the Local Sporting Champions Grants offered by the Australian Sports Commission.

“I congratulate the following fine young people for their excellent achievements and I wish them all the best in their progress,” said Sharman Stone.

1. Jesse Trower, Golf, 12 years old.
2. Shaun Geraghty, Track and Field, 18 years old.
3. Oliver Goodwin, Soccer, 14 years old.
4. Alexandra Radevski, Golf, 16 years old.
5. Liam Schreck, Champion in Triple Jump, 12 years old.
6. Zoe Sleeth, Karate, 13 years old.
7. Tristan Zito, Soccer, 13 years old.
8. Liesl Brauer, Surf Life Saving, 16 years old.
9. Laitham Vandameer, Football, 12 years old.

“Young athletes from regional areas have to devote extra time and commitment into the sports of their choice to ensure they are on par with their metropolitan counterparts.

“Living in a regional area should never prevent our young sporting talents reaching their full potential.

“However, the travel from regional areas, accommodation, equipment and uniforms needed to participate is costly and sadly many young sporting talents are forced to withdraw from representative events.

“Nothing should come in the way of having our young champions’ dreams realised. I encourage our youth to be the best they can be and make full use of all the help available.

“There are three funding rounds annually and applications are accepted all year round.

“Applications received during the period of 1 November 2011 to 28 February 2012 will be assessed in April 2012. Applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application in May 2012.

“For more information and application forms contact my office toll free 1300 132 413 or check the website http://www.ausport.gov.au”, Sharman Stone said.
