Australia Day Celebrations
January 25, 2012
There are times when we will take for granted the freedom, safety and diversity that we enjoy in our great country. But the truth is we are really fortunate to be here in Australia.
“The last decade or so has been a real testing ground for us here in Murray with the drought, fires, and flooding. Through it all, we stuck by each other and have been real Aussie battlers,” said Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray.
“It is crucial that we not only remember our many fantastic locals, young and old who are the life-blood of our communities but also those that are still rebuilding their lives and communities after our natural disasters.
“Without everyone helping each other and people volunteering their time for our local sporting clubs, charity organisations, aged care homes, local schools, and service clubs, our communities would not be so strong.
“There are many ways to celebrate Australia Day across the Murray region. Some attended community celebrations while others enjoyed a BBQ at home. Whatever the way, it was a great day to celebrate our wonderful mateship and willingness to be ever-ready to lend a hand.
“In many townships there are awards being given to the Citizens, Young Citizens and Community groups who have made outstanding contributions to the community.
“There are a number of new citizens presented with their citizenship certificates at one of our local ceremonies. We welcome them warmly as new Australians,” Sharman Stone said.
