Urgent - Eildon Dam Water Release Update
September 7, 2010
As a response to the urgings of Sharman Stone, the Victorian Government has been forced to stop the release of water from Eildon Dam into the flooded Goulburn River to pump down the North South pipeline to Sugarloaf Reservoir.
Until mid-morning the Victorian Government was releasing 430 megalitres a day from Eildon Dam into the Goulburn River exacerbating the flooding of the River.
Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray, emailed Premier Brumby and Water Minister Tim Holding this morning just before 9.00am with an urgent appeal to stop the releases.
According to the amended update to the GM-W telemetry message on Eildon storage levels the release of 300 mgs of water into the flooded Goulburn River to be pumped down the North South pipeline to Sugarloaf Reservoir was to cease at 10.00am this morning.
However the 130 mgs of environmental flow has been allowed to continue.
Sharman Stone said “the release of water out of Eildon into the Goulburn has already caused great distress up and down stream with the extra pressure on the swollen river, all in order to pump water to Sugarloaf Reservoir which is almost full.
This is water Melbourne does not need.
It is good news that the Victorian Government has been shocked and shamed into stopping the release of water for the pipeline. Now they must stop the environmental flow which is nonsense in these flooded conditions,” Sharman Stone said.
Sharman Stone wants a written assurance that the water releases will not be restarted until Eildon dam is full, and in particular while these flood conditions continue.
