How's your Macular?
April 28, 2011
Macular Degeneration Awareness Week 2011 is being held from Sunday 22 May to Saturday 28 May.
Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone is encouraging all residents in the Murray electorate to have their eyes tested and their macular checked during this week.
“Macular Degeneration (MD) affects one in seven people over 50, and the incidence increases with age, if you are a smoker and if there is a history of MD in your family.
“What a lot of people don’t know is that MD is currently the leading cause of legal blindness and vision loss in Australia,” Sharman Stone said.
“This week is an opportunity for people of all ages to have their eyes and macular checked in order to reduce the risk of MD. It is also an ideal time for people to understand what MD is, its symptoms for early detection, the need to eat lots of green leafy vegetables and fish, and how to live a healthy lifestyle,” Sharman Stone said.
