Child care rebate cap is bad policy by Government
June 4, 2010
A joint media release from Damian Hale, ALP member for Solomon in the Northern Territory, and Warren Snowdon, Minister for Indigenous Services, Rural and Regional Health and Regional Services Delivery, was issued on 3 June 2010.
The release was meant to inform people of the transfer of 570 child care centres across Australia from ABC Learning to the not-for-profit company Good Start.
As is the practice with a media release, the policies of the opposing party are attacked but Mr Hale has kicked an own goal with this sentence: “A vote for Mr Abbott means a vote for a lower child care rebate. It’s a vote for a cap on that rebate that leaves families thousands of dollars short. In short, it’s a vote that’s not worth risking on our children’s future,” added Mr Hale.
The Coalition will not block this budget measure because it is going to save $86 million. It is a bad policy but it is Government policy. The Coalition will correct the damage this Rudd Labor Government is doing when it is returned to Government.
